LECTURE NOTES

WEEK 2 (01.4.2022)

During the second week, we were introduced to shot sizes in cinematography, which determines how large the area that’s visible within the frame. During class, we were shown how cinema started and introduced to the shot sizes, screen directing, and the rule of thirds. Lastly, we were tested on determining the shot sizes to make sure we were understanding the lecture.

Types of Shots (according to the distance from the subject)

WEEK 2 (08.4.2022): Shooting Exercise

Later that day, we were tasked with a new shooting exercise that required us, the F2F students to pair up with 2 other students to work as a group to capture different shot sizes with locations around the area right outside of our classroom. I paired up with Adena and Kai Jun for this exercise, we went up a floor to find space to film.

We were all required to film clips for the respective shot sizes, and there are a total of 8 shot sizes that were needed to film by us.

When doing the exercise, we were reminded of some things to be cautious about, such as:

- Shoot the wide shot with a wide angle

- The rest ZOOM IN to get a soft background

- Refer to the examples provided or google references for good composition

- Avoid overexposed or underexposed (too bright or too dark)

- Do the shooting during the daytime

- Shoot landscape format video, 5 seconds per shot

- Edit with CAPTION (Mention the shot size), export the video for submission

Starting with this exercise, I, Adena, and Kaijun went out of the classroom to the 8th floor to start our shooting. We first found a good spot for filming and taking turns, we filmed each other with our own phone cameras. At first, we were uncertain about the camera angles and their outcome, however, we guided each other and learned as we filmed.

Exercise 1

After that, we were tasked to stitch together video clips inspired by the short film, LALIN. The video clips which were filmed by our seniors have to be edited based on the storyboard given in the Google drive. We were to utilize Premiere Pro for this exercise as well.

WEEK 3 (15.4.2022): MV shooting exercise

In week 3, we were tasked to shoot and edit an MV with the provided shots, we can work with a song of our choice as long as we followed the given of shots. We then came down to some song options, it was either Run2U by Stayc or WA DA DA by Kep1er (케플러), in the end, we all agreed on WA DA DA because the style of the song provided more elements for MV shooting and editing.

We planned out some shots for the MV shooting during a meeting call.

- Wide Shot - high angle (Solo) - 3 single full body shots - eye level (Members at side) - Medium Shot - Eye level (Solo) - Medium Close-up Shot - Eye level (Solo) - Close-up Shot - Eye level (Solo) - Extreme Close-up Shot - Eye level (Solo) - Wide Shot - Low angle (Solo)

After the planning, we proceeded with our individual shooting where we set a deadline for every group member to finish shooting. The footage will then be uploaded onto a shared Google folder where we can all access it.

I added captions when the song name comes on to add more effect.

I also added cinematic black bars on some parts of the video to enhance the overall look of the MV.

WEEK 3 (15.4.2022): 3 act structure case study

In week 3, we were introduced to the 3-act structure in storytelling, which consists of a beginning, middle, and end. After learning about this, we attempted to write our own 3-act structure with the short videos shown. In the given google document, we had to watch and identify the acts and plot points of the story, and then write them down accordingly.

The 3-act structure case study:
1) Burrow - Short animation
2) Guang (光) - A musical short film about Autism
3) LALIN - Short film

WEEK 5 (27.4.2022): Group Shooting Exercise

After we were done with the shooting, the clips were imported into a Google Drive which were then shared to every group member.

B. Editing Process

When editing the video, I used several effects to enhance the clips and audio, for example, I applied 'Warp Stabilizer' effect to the clips that were wobbly and unstable.

Fig. 5.13 Screenshot of imported clips in Premiere Pro, week 6 (5/5/22)

When editing the video, I also did some color correcting to balance the colour out and make them match with he rest of the video clips. In this case, I made the clip cooler as the tone were too warm on the Vectorscope.

As for the audio, we filmed some shots outdoor so there would naturally be some outdoor noise recorded, to get rid of that or to decrease the noise, I added the 'DeNoise' effect to the audios which were filmed outdoor.

Reflection:

This project was a whole new learning experience for me because I have never participated in a project where the main task is to film and edit, and that task was the main elements for this project 2. During this project, I have tried filming myself, filming my friends, and even being in a filming crew as a sound girl. The experience was new, but the result and filming outcome is just as satisfying if not more satisfying than other projects ever, because not only did we have to do editing work but also physical work such as filming and other physical tasks. This project also in a way pushed me to be more comfortable in working as a group, although I was nervous at first, I made many new friends and grew closer with my friends while we were working on the tasks in this projects.
