-

Lecture Summary (Data Collection):

- Video recording has to be recorded together with the cameras on or videos won't be assessed

- Premalinary ideas proposed cannot be too direct, take a look at the questions and objective and produce an outcome based on a message.

- For Data Collection, it should revolve around answering our research questions, and while doing that, discover additional data by doing netography like interviews, google forms and etc...

- Find out what are the materials and how are we materializing our research to format and outcome

Data Collection

Meeting (18/01/2022):

On 18/2 Tuesday, we had a group discussion to popularize our slides on Data Collecting which is due 7/2 Monday 5pm, in the call we've decided that our final outcome would be to create a 'Game Art Book'

Final Idea:

Game Art Book

Artists' books (or book arts or book objects) are works of art that utilize the form of the book.
An artist's book is a medium of artistic expression that uses the form or function of “book” as inspiration. It is the artistic initiative seen in the illustration, choice of materials, creation process, layout, and design that makes it an art object.

A comprehensive art book consisting of different original characters, created by each of the group members. The main goal and purpose of the book are being able to put across the point of the freedom of expression in this ‘safe haven.’

Method of Data Collection

We came down with a total of 3 ways to collect our data.

Quantitative Method: Google survey research
Quslitative Method: Voice/ Physical interviews & Google Research

1. Google Survey Research

Alicia carried out a google survey where she asked questions relating to personas.
Since the majority voted on the game-art book, we carried on with that. With the rationale in mind, we will be 'personifying the answers' from the google survey

Each person will get a few answers from the google survey, and we will turn those into the characters we think are saying it. With that, in the artbook itself, we can draw whatever we want.

Below are the concluded results from the Google Survey Form that has been personified:

2. Voice/ Physical Interviews

During the meeting, we brainstormed some questions that we would eventually ask our interviewee in a voice or physical interview, later on, these are the 7 questions we will ask.

I started my voice and physical interview on the 22nd and ended the day after. I started with a discord call with Sin Yi, my friend, and ended with Daphnie, my sister whose interview I did with her in person.

Answers:

1. Never really looked into it but I usually know it as the term ‘gamer tag’

2. It is a way to express who we really are, we didn’t get to choose our own names as it was
chosen for us so through an online persona, we get to express to others what we want to
portray.

3. No, I don’t think I’m any different with every person I interact with. Some people call me
by my alias in real life as well, so I feel that I am the same person both online and in real
life, however, I do know that it doesn’t apply to everyone.

4. I would say it is 50/ 50 as we are still ourselves, we talk to different people with different
personalities and that will lead us to present ourselves differently, I will tone down a bit
to suit the situations or friend groups, like when hanging out with introverts, being too
hyper can be creepy or weird to them, it just doesn’t make sense that way.

5. In my experience, I saw people online who are totally different people. When using an
online identity, you can create a character however you want to be perceived by others,
like what you post and your profile picture.

6. When I wish to express myself in real life, I would need an audience that we usually
wouldn't have in real life, sometimes we don’t need a specific person to listen but we
want to voice out about something, and online personas allow me to post anything
without the expectation that people have to reply or react. I also think it’s difficult to find
time to talk and express ourselves as well, I think that is why we resort to doing it online.

7. I usually express myself through Discord, we all have our own server, we can game with
friends, just the way we maintain servers shows how things work, it reflects on how we
like to make friends with others. In my experience, I’ve joined multiple servers, and each
of them is different from one another. As for social media, it is a place for me to share my
story whenever I want as someone who doesn’t vent in real life, I can occasionally spread
awareness about things like mental health or post anything you like and share them to
express my love for games.

Answers:

1. Yes, I use it as my in-game name. It’s also what my close friends call me, I use my
nickname as my internet identity, I figured having a nickname gives off a version of
myself that I wish to portray.

2. To make things more mysterious and cool for others and myself because the online public
view you as what you show to people, right off the bat people would see you differently
whereas in real life we won’t be able to express ourselves the way we would wish.

3. Yes of course, because it depends on the friend group and the energy that they give, I
would try my best to match the friend groups’ environment.

4. No, I treat everyone the same morally, unless they don’t show any form of respect or
basic manners towards me from the start.

5. To some extent, yes but not entirely because that is something I created so using that
image or name is just a version that I wish to appear as to seem cooler to others when I’m
not able to in real life.

6. On the contrary, I am quieter when it comes to being in discord with my friend because
having the freedom to say whatever you want gives you confidence and that would
sometimes lead to me saying the wrong things to my online friends.

7. One way I feel that I’m able to truly express myself is through discord voice chat.
Without others knowing my real identity, I can express my thoughts towards them even
though sometimes that opinion may cause conflict because I won’t be faced with real-life consequences of the actions I do in a voice chat.

3. Google Research

With the purpose of gathering even more information about personas, we headed off to Google, which allowed us to gather even more information about the topic at hand.
One of our research questions is, “How can we create/simulate the safe haven concept for the viewer with our projects?

The definition of creating is to bring into existence or produce using our imaginative skills (Merriam Webster, n.d.).

In order to do that, we can utilize visual communication to deliver information more directly to our audience. By practicing the usage of visual elements, we get to convey a message, inspire, change or evoke emotions.

Fig. 1.6 Visual Communication

In visual communication, the visual part provides a deeper understanding of which words might not have. It allows for a link between concepts and words and helps to provide a diverse audience’s needs as people are 60,000 times faster in processing visuals than in text.

Communication design: Provides a platform to educate, motivate and engage
Graphic design: Showcases platforms that are eye-catching and visually informative.

Real-World Benefits of Viewing Art

  • Studies have shown a link between partaking in cultural activities with having better mental & physical health as well as higher contentment with their lives.
  • Professor Semir Zeki, a neurobiologist, found that humans can trigger the release of dopamine when looking at art they find beautiful.

Benefits of Art-Books

  • Provides a tactile experience to the user, allowing them to get away from their gadgets and use their free time without needing to look at the screen.
  • Serve as a piece of interesting entertainment that can inspire conversations and thoughts.
  • Allows for one to express themselves as it can contain your interests, styles, designs, information, & art. This also allows for one to easily share their interests.
  • Allows for one to engage with a whole body of work, rather than a piece of print. A collection can provide multiple insights into a type of work.
  • Great if there is limited wall space, and is flexible.
  • The beautiful inspiration which can be easily accessible can create ‘pauses’ in our daily lives.
  • Somehow like picture books for grown-ups, where pictures can stimulate our thoughts and feelings.

From the information collected from our Data Collection, we gathered in a group meeting to put together the slides

We Decided To Include In Our Presentation:

1. Purpose
2. Data Collection Methods
3. Data
4. How We Decided To Utilize Data
5. Bring awareness to the consequences of the safe haven in gaming
6. To understand the behaviors and personalities of players.
7. To understand if there are more personal or otherwise deeper reasons that motivate people to immerse themselves in the ‘safe havens’ in gaming

FEEDBACK:

Week 4
Specific Feedback:

good proposal, however
1- RQ1 - How can we create/simulate the safe haven concept for the viewer with our projects?

2- Best ideas: Project ideas 1, 2 and 5 - For execution wise and resource capacity

General Feedback:
For data collection, it should revolve around answering the research questions. You may stumble across any interesting facts outside of your questions, but do include them. When doing it, think about how you materialize ur chosen idea and the materials you decide to use. Simply put, look wider, what are the other things that you need to collect other than interviews & literature.

Think about the message you want to give for your outcome. You can choose 2 of the questions out of your research, decide your message. Decide what is the best form to deliver that message/culture. Can be digital, physical, with no limit for size.
