LECTURE NOTE:

This week, Mr. Martin introduced us to the basics of After Effects which will be used in our next project "Self-Titled".

What is After Effects?

Adobe After Effects is a 2.5D animation software used for animation, visual effects, and motion picture compositing.

After Effects is used in film, TV, and web video creation.

This software is used in the post-production phase, and has hundreds of effects that can be used to manipulate imagery. This allows you to combine layers of video and images into the same scene.

What can we do with After Effects?

Adobe After Effects takes a different approach to create movement.

Motion graphics animation works by manipulating vector and rasterized art to create and tell a story. You can integrate physical-based media as well through photographs and videography.

Starting with our next project

To start with our next project we are shown a demo of our exercise which is to practice and to get ourselves familiar with the After Effect. To start, we can do a pre-composition in Adobe Photoshop and transfer the file in After Effect, and we are to arrange our composition in After Effects then attempt to animate each of the layers using the key points and effects.

PRACTICAL

DIGITAL IMAGING - After Effects Exercise

Submission: WEEK 10

For our After Effects exercise, we are tasked to follow along with the demo video demonstrated by Mr. Martin and Mr. Fauzi during class. Below is the composition was given to us in PSD format, we were to import this file into After Effects and animate each of the layers.

Fig. 1.3 Composition for exercise

Layers of the composition:
  • Typewriter- Moves up and down (bounces)
  • Fencer- Moves left and right (fencing movement)
  • Shark- Moves diagonally (swimming motion)
  • Projector- Falls from the top (vibrates when hits composition point to emphasize weight)
  • Texture background- Moves forward and backward for movement

After deciding the movement of each of my layers, I start by animating each one of them creating keyframes starting with typewriter then shark then fencer then the projector, while the textured background moves from beginning till end. Each of the keyframes is placed so the layers are able to fade out. After placing each of the keyframes respectively, I added a am 'easy ease' for each of the layers to allow smoother motion.
