Experience

It's the end of module Typography and I would like to say that it was a challenging one, not the challenging type of module that I am just unable to learn from, but the ones that constantly test my ability and help me to actually learn a ton from.  All the tasks, lectures, and blogs tests my limits and allowed me to break my boundaries in order to touch on something even deeper than just 'design'. I'm glad that I had this opportunity to learn from Mr. Vinod and also guided by Mr. Charles, both of who are lecturers that constantly remind us the students the true meaning and purpose of constructing a typeface, layout, font, blogs, and many more. 2 years ago, I would have never thought that I would touch on and learn about typography, but I would have to say that this was one of them or not the most informational and helpful module I had this semester. It helped me develop my skills in paying more attention to details when constructing a typeface and I can't wait to further develop my skills in Advanced Typography in the later months.

Observations

After each week of completing the tasks and receiving feedback during class, I learned how to observe a typeface by deconstructing them and viewing them close-up, by doing this, I have observed various characteristics of a typeface/ letters that I would have never thought to pay any attention to. For example, what is letter-spacing, the flow of a passage and/ or paragraph, how letter kerns, and much more? Through this, I learned to critique my own design by close-up observations, making sure what works and what doesn't, which would help me a lot in the future.

Findings

Throughout the semester, I have found that a typeface is whatever you want it to be, whether it be one that is simple, handwritten-like, decorative, Sci-Fi, or just whatever you could think of. Before getting to know typography, I honestly thought that it was a hassle to learn and decipher all the characteristics, however as of now, I see a totally new light from typography, I now see everything except for the hassle in Typography, it really is like a form of art, just one that we use to communicate with. Although there are guidelines and some degree of rules to constructing a typeface, I also feel that with enough observations and understanding, maybe in the future, we could even create something so out of the ordinary, that would soon reform and enhance typography while still keeping and following its methods, systems, and practice.
