Going into our 6th week of lecture, I am looking forward to what the lecture had to offer as we have just finished with project 1. This week, we have briefed the rest of our project 2 and how to execute it.

LECTURE NOTE:

This week, Mr. Martin introduced us to poster design execution and more specifically, about Public Service Announcement posters (PSA). It is related to our project 2, we are taught how to start and do our research, then we are taught about the ways to define our concept.

  1. What is Public Service Announcement (PSA)?
A public service announcement (PSA) is a message in the public interest disseminated without charge, with the objective of raising awareness of, and changing public attitudes and behavior towards, a social issue.

To proceed with our poster, we would have to start with our research. To do that, we are recommended to follow these 3 steps:
  1. Research about your topic
  2. Define your concept
  3. Start to develop your design projects
1) Research about your topic

  1. Study and gather all related information about your topic.
  2. Write a summary of your topic
  3. Highlight the key points of your summary
  4. Define the Title
  5. Define the Slogan
  6. Define the Details
  7. Define the Call For Action
We have to create a section for each content (Title, Slogan, Details, and Call for Action).
Nest, we sketch a mock-up poster and fill in the details.

The following step is to decide on an approach, how is the designer going to evoke the viewers' feelings to deliver a strong message.

Shock Value → Brutal
Provocative → Upsetting
Humor → Sarcastic
Sensitive → Heartwarming
Artistic → Subtle

PRACTICAL

DIGITAL IMAGING EXERCISE 1 (5%) - Photo Manipulation

Submission: WEEK 6

On week 6, I started editing myself into the Hearst Mansion after trying out with Shazam. I have decided to take a picture of me sitting by the pool, and playing with the water.

Step 1)
Mask me out of the original image and paste it onto the Hearst Mansion background.

Step 2)
Add an adjustment layer to match the color tone of the background.

Step 3)
Add a second adjustment layer on my leg to create a water effect

Step 4)
Add another copy of myself to create a reflection on the water

Step 5)
Add finishing touches like shadow and highlight

After I was done with the finishing touches, I exported it with 300 dpi.

DIGITAL IMAGING EXERCISE 02 (PART 01: RECOLORING)

This week, we are required to work on a new skillset, recoloring. It is something I've been meaning to learn since we started with this module. So, I am super excited to get into it!

Fig. 2.1 Image before recoloring

We are first given a black & white image of an old man and are required to put colors back into the old man, including the background.

Fig. 2.2 Skin layer

Firstly, I colored the skin with an orangey skin color with the 12% hardness on the brush as advised. I then switched the color layer to 'overlay' with the original image to create a natural look.

Fig. 2.3 Hair layer

Secondly, I added a brown color to his hair for the color and did the same steps like I did for the skin until I got natural-looking hair.

Fig. 2.4 Shirt layer

Next, I went for a more funky color for his shirt (red and green), which happens to be the colors of watermelon too. I then repeated the same steps as before.

Fig. 2.5 Facial features layer

After that, I added colors to his facial features like eyes and lips. I matched his eye to his shirt to create an image with harmony. I then repeated the steps as before until I got the natural look.

Fig. 2.7 Final Outcome

Lastly, to finish up the whole image, I added a yellow background which also suits his shorts and eyes as it is a bright color and appears funky-looking. To me, he looks like a retired disco king.

REFLECTION

This process was surprisingly easier than I thought it would be. Not just that, it is the skill that I've always wanted to learn, but never really got to it. So thanks to this exercise, I got to learn it. I also had to most fun writing blogs for Digital Photography & Imaging module because we get to explain our steps and show the details like we did for all the exercises and projects.
