Going into our 5th week of lecture, I am looking forward to what the lecture had to offer as we have just finished with project 1. This week, we are briefed on our project 2 and how to execute it.

LECTURE NOTE:

This week, Mr. Martin introduced us to poster design development which is related to our project 2, we are introduced to the history, type of poster, then project brief and some examples. During the lecture, Mr. Martin encouraged us to try out the Shazam edit before attempting the project edit.

  1. Conceptual Poster Design
What is a poster?
Posters are a convenient medium to convey information to the target audience.

Posters can be cluttered or straightforward.
If too many colors, fonts, images, or animated figures are involved in conveying information or message, it confuses the viewers.

Fig. 1.1 Good & bad representation of a poster

The power of posters in generating awareness on an issue or conveying a brand message and luring the audience into buying products or services is immense.

With that, Mr. Martin showed us the questions that we have to ask ourselves when making a poster for our project
  1. Is it a poster for brand awareness?
  2. Is it an advertising poster?
  3. Is it a Public Service Announcement poster?
What is the meaning of Public Service Announcement?
: A public service announcement (PSA) is a message in the public interest disseminated without charge, with the objective of raising awareness of, and changing public attitudes and behavior towards, a social issue.

Here are some examples of
Public Service Announcement (PSA) Poster

Once we have narrowed down our scope, we can start to research the topic, define the concept then start to develop design projects.

1) For our research these are steps we are to follow:
  • Study and gather all related information about your topic.
  • Write a summary of your topic
  • Highlight the key points of your summary
  • Define the Title
  • Define the Slogan
  • Define the Details
  • Define the Call For Action
The power of posters in generating awareness on an issue or conveying a brand message and luring the audience into buying products or services is immense.

2) To define our concept these are the steps we are to follow:
  • Create a section for each content (Title, Slogan, Details & Call for Action)
  • Sketch your mockup poster
  • Fill in with details
3) To develop our design projects, these are to steps we are to follow:
  • Draft the digital poster based on your sketch
  • Develop the composition techniques using Digital Photography & Graphic Design.
  • Apply color, typography, textures & effects
  • Finalize your design with color correction

Fig. 1.3 Example of a creative poster

A creative poster includes these 4 elements:
(Layout, flow, and color affect the order and style of these four key features.)
  1. Title
  2. Graphic
  3. Text
  4. White space

Title
The title is a descriptive indicator of the contents of the poster, and it should not exceed two lines of text.
Fig. 1.4 Poster of title

Text
The text should clearly describe the message clearly but not overloaded.

Fig. 1.5 Poster of text

Graphic (Photo)
Graphics must appear in context with the main text. Choose high-resolution images (300 dpi or higher).

White space
White space creates “breathing room” within the poster, which helps viewers avoid feeling overwhelmed by the information being presented.

PRACTICAL
PROJECT 2A: EXERCISE 1 (PHOTO MANIPULATION)

For our practical in week 5, we were required to use our masking and photo manipulation skills to edit Shazam into a given background.

Fig. 1.1 Shazam before and after masking

In order to place shazam into a background, I would have to remove the excess background space, leaving only Shazam in the selection. To do that I used the 'Quick Selection Tool'

Fig. 1.3 Colour manipulation of Shazam

Next, I changed the tone and colour of Shazam in order to match the background which will create a smoother whole image. To do that, I used the 'Adjustment Layer' and added a photo filter to match the background colour, which is dark blue.

Fig. 1.5 Shadow blurring effect

After that, I manipulated the shadow and created a blur effect using the 'Gaussian Blur', to make it appear like the reflection is on top of the water's surface.

Final Submission

REFLECTION:

This was my third time creating a mask of an object and placing it onto a background, it is a very useful tool and I think I learned valuable skills from this exercise, especially when creating the reflection of Shazam on the water’s surface. I hope we could do more exercises like this. Just to mention, I didn’t know that submission was yesterday hence the late submission, this will not happen again, sir.
